Montserrat

Montserrat, the only country outside of Ireland to celebrate St. Patricks Day as a national holiday, is a lush green and mountainous island of approximately 39 square miles that lies in the Eastern Caribbean chain of islands. Known fondly as the Caribbeans emerald isle, this pear shaped island is a travelers paradise for nature lovers, divers, adventurers, villa vacationers, and honeymooners.  This British overseas territory boasts the spectacular Soufri│re Hills Volcano, a modern day Pompeii in the form of its buried former capital city Plymouth, alongside lush, green mountains, world class nature trails, deserted dark sand beaches, untouched reefs and a quiet friendly charm reminiscent of the way the Caribbean used to be.

Story Angles
Volcano watching, diving, eco-tourism, music, adventure, experiential travel, cultural festivals, and villa vacations

Good to know
Montserrat is the only island in the Caribbean with a noticeable Irish heritage.  Volcanic activity increased the physical size of the island and even created a new beach. There are no stoplights, traffic jams, crowded beaches or large mega-resorts on the island. The destination is home to a modern-day Pompeii, the now-buried former capital city, Plymouth.
