Trinidad and Tobago plays host to international bartenders during pre-Carnival mixology competition

Port of Spain, Trinidad – February 11, 2013. Trinidad and Tobago's iconic bitters brand, Angostura, hosted its eighth annual Global Cocktail Challenge this weekend, naming Trinidad and Tobago native Daniyel Jones as the 2013 winner. The challenge has become one of the top events during the destination's annual Carnival celebrations with eleven of the world's top bartenders competing to win $10,000 and title of Global Challenge Cocktail Champ. The winner also received a one-year contract to represent Angostura as the company's global brand ambassador.

As part of his role as global brand ambassador, Jones will be making appearances all over the world, hosting tasting sessions, performing live demonstrations, creating drink recipes, judging Angostura's regional competitions and keeping the Trini-spirits top-of-mind to consumers worldwide.

The competition, which was held at Angostura's headquarters, pitted the local representative, Jones, against ten world-class mixologists from every corner of the globe.  The second-place title was awarded to Ukraine's Stanislav Mukhin. The bartenders competed in several rounds of preliminary competitions with the hopes of being invited to the finale in which the competitors had seven minutes to make two servings of their entry cocktail. The cocktails were judged by an esteemed panel that included world-renowned bartender and author Salvatore Calabrese as head judge; acclaimed bartender Hidetsugu Ueno; the executive director of Tales of the Cocktail, Ann Tuennerman; Angostura's executive director of technical operations, Vidia Doodnath; and last year's winner, David Delaney, Jr.

Locals and island visitors have been enjoying several weeks of contests, celebrations and parties as part of the destination's build-up towards its annual Carnival festivities, officially taking place February 11 and 12, 2013. This past weekend, along with Angostura's Global Cocktail Challenge, the island was abuzz with its famed Kings and Queens Parade, final steel pan competition, Panorama, and Kiddie Carnival.
