PURPLE DRAGON INTERNATIONAL KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD AT HYATT REGENCY TRINIDAD

Celebrity and martial arts enthusiasts from around the world celebrate 40th anniversary at premier Trinidad hotel
 

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (August 2, 2010) Hyatt Regency Trinidad recently hosted the Purple Dragon International School of Don Jitsu Ryu World Karate Championships. From July 16 to 18, as part of the world-renowned martial arts school's 40th anniversary celebration, over 400 participants from 25 countries were involved in the three-day tournament.
 
"While Purple Dragon International School has grown to become a global organization, it all started right here in Trinidad," said Russell George, general manager of Hyatt Regency Trinidad.  "We are honored that this year the championships were held here and that Hyatt Regency Trinidad could be a part of this international event."
 
Specially invited guests included Billy Blanks, Taekwondo expert and founder of the Tae Bo exercise system, Professor Robert Crosson, founder of Sugar-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu, Shihan Bob Mueller of Canada's Best Karate school and Kendo Master Michael Komoto.
Participating countries included U.S.A., Canada, Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Tortola, Japan, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Bahamas, Nepal and Venezuela.

 

After three days of challenging martial arts competition, the host nation Trinidad & Tobago took top honors with a total of 315 medals. Canada finished in second place with 74 medals and the United States walked away with 59 medals. Jamaica came in fourth place with 25 medals. Aside from the local Purple Dragon schools in attendance, schools from Canada and the United States were present along with schools from Dominica, Tortola, Cayman Islands, the United Kingdom and Grenada. Also in attendance were local non-Purple Dragon schools Capoiera Axe, Golden Eagle and Shaolin Temple.
